Tips for a Safe and Enjoyable Car Trip
With summer just around the corner, a lot of people will be taking family car trips.  Here’s how to make
your next long-distance car trip enjoyable and safe:
Pack a first-aid kit, water, blankets, snacks and a flashlight.
Bring headphones for all CD, DVD, and MP3 players, so noise doesn’t distract the driver.
Schedule frequent rest stops, so children don’t get restless.  And don’t just stop to use the
restrooms; look for locations that have wide-open grass areas and let the kids and/or pets get some
exercise for 10 or 15 minutes.
Keep all doors locked, especially when you’re driving in stop-and-go traffic.
Don’t let children lie down in the car.  They are not
protected by seat belts in the prone position.
Never put infants in the front seat.  Studies show
children receive fewer fatal injuries when riding in the
back seat.
Never store anything on the shelf behind the back seat.
If you stop suddenly, these items can be thrown
forward with tremendous force.
Safe Car Travel Means Having a Safe Car
When your family is trying to decide on the best car to buy, there are a lot of differing opinions based on
different priorities.  To narrow the chances, make safety a top priority.  Here are seven top priority
safety features for cars new or used:
Safety belts: They’re standard, but you should choose the kind that will fit most comfortably for you
and your family.
Air bags: They save lives.  Deaths in frontal crashes are about 20 percent lower in cars with air bags
than in cars without them.
Daytime running lights: They help other drivers on the road see you.
