How to Keep Your Brain
Young
Memory lapses dont have to be an inevitable part of growing older. Fortify your brain by eating the
right foods. Heres some food for thought:
Fruits and veggies: A study of elderly people showed that those who ate the most fruits and
vegetables and the least fat and cholesterol performed best on cognitive tests. Researchers believe
that the antioxidants in fruits and vegetables help protect the body and brain cells from free radicals,
which break them down. The most potent brain protectors include blueberries and blackberries, as well
as prunes, raisins, garlic, kale, raw spinach, tomatoes and dried apricots.
B vitamin foods: Foods such as nonfat milk, yogurt and whole grains contain a lot of B vitamins,
especially B-12, B-6 and folic acid. B vitamins help protect some neurological problems including
memory loss.
Fish: They contain a lot of the healthy type of fat that is needed for brain cells to communicate with one
another properly. Also, studies have shown that eating
fish helps prevent and alleviate some disorders such as
depression.
Moderate amounts of alcohol: Older people who
have one drink a day seem to have an added protection
against failing memory.
