How To Take Medicine Safely
More than three billion prescription drugs were dispensed last year.  While medical advances in drugs
are keeping us healthier for longer, we consumers may not always be using them safely or to their full
potential.  Check out these stats:
38 percent of Americans don’t inform their doctors of all the prescriptions and over-the-counter drugs
they take.
Up to 50 percent of Americans don’t take their drugs as prescribed.
Aside from keeping your doctor or pharmacist well informed about the medication you take, keep these
guidelines in mind:
Don’t store pills in the bathroom.  Steam from the shower can seep through the medicine cabinet
and break down the pill’s chemical makeup.
Finish all your antibiotics.  If you don’t, the bacteria
may build up a resistance and become more virulent.
And just because you feel better doesn’t mean the
bacteria is gone.
Never crush pills.  Many drugs are formulated to be
time-released.  If you crush the pill, it loses its
effectiveness and may cause stomach upset.
Keep pills in their original bottles.  Not only does this
ensure you are taking the right pills, it also protects the
pills themselves.  The opaque brown bottles keep the
pills from sunlight exposure so they don’t lose their
potency.
